Fast Start To Tropical Storm Season, But No Biggies - Yet

If you blinked, you missed it.

But Tropical Storm Edouard formed in the Atlantic Ocean well off the United States East Coast Sunday and dissipated in less than 24 hours. Top winds were a paltry 40 mph.

The only impressive thing about Edouard was it's the earliest we've gotten to the letter "E" for an Atlantic tropical storm on record. (Tropical storms come in alphabetical order, so Edouard was the fifth tropical storm of the season).

The last time we'e seen anything like this was the previous record breaking early season in 2005, when Emily formed on July 12, 2005.

That year was when the infamous Hurricane Katrina hit.  We also had destructive hurricanes Rita and Wilma, among others.

Like most years, the early storms so far this summer have been relatively weak, with none of them becoming full-blown hurricanes. The early season of 2005 was remarkable because storms like Dennis became a Category 4 monster near Cuba and Emily in the Atlantic turned into the earliest Category 5 Atlantic hurricane on record. Both storms formed in July that year.

Category 5 storms are the strongest and worst of the bunch.  

In an average year, the first full hurricane of the season gets going around August 10. The season peaks in September.

According to Dr. Jeff Masters, writing in the Yale Climate Connection, noted the early 2005 storms formed deep in the tropics. That pattern is usually a harbinger of a severe hurricane season and 2005 was certainly that.

So far, all but one of this year's tropical storms have formed further north, which is less of a sign that this year will be tough.  There might actually be another northern, weak tropical storm in our future. There's a weather disturbance over Georgia this morning.  If it emerges out into the werm waters off the coast of the Carolinas, it could turn into Tropical Storm Fay in a few days.

But don't relax.  There are plenty of other signs we could be in trouble with hurricanes later this summer and fall.

The tropical Atlanttic waters are mostly much warmer than average.  Hot water is fuel for hurricanes, as long as there's not a lot of strong upper level winds to tear thunderstorms apart. Overall water temperatures in the tropical Atlantic are actually a little warmer than the toasty levels see in 2005.

The overall weather pattern, and relatively warm water tempertatures in the eastern Pacific, influence the air over the Atlantic tropical region.  Upper level winds are forecast to be relatively light in the Atlantic, which would encourage hurricanes to form.

Additionally, a region in Africa south of the Sahara Desert has been wet and stormy in the late spring and early summer.

If this pattern continues. some of that storminess would move westward off the coast of Africa into the Atlantic Ocean and spawn hurricanes.

Hurricanes forming from these disturbances coming from Africa are often the most dangerous. They have time to get strong as they move westward toward the Caribbean, and ultimately, sometimes the United States.

Even if this year turns out to be a busy one with hurricanes, everything depends on their paths.  If all of them manage to stay well out to sea, well, then who cares? It's all good.

But chances are, at least one biggie, if not more will threaten Caribbean islands and the United States. Basically, everyone even remotely near the coast from Brownsville, Texas to Eastport, Maine should keep an eye on the tropics through the autumn, just in case.

Hot Arctic, Bad Hurricanes, Carbon And Coronavirus: All Bad Climate Change News

A few reports, studies and breaking news this week have all been bad news in the climate change department. Let's get into them:

ARCTIC HEAT

The (sort of) breaking news is a weird Arctic heat wave that has spread from Siberia and is reaching the North Pole and parts of Greenland. 

As noted in Gizmodo, temperatures at the North Pole will probably get a bit above freezing in the next few days.  For most of us, temperatures in the low to mid 30s most certainly does not constitute a heat wave. 

But such temperatures are odd for the North Pole, especially this early in the season.  Plus, it gets the Arctic off to an early start to the melt season. 

Same is true in Greenland.  The warmth has gotten the melt season going two weeks earlier than normal.  True, not a huge amount of ice has melted in this heat wave, compared to some mid-summer epic melts in recent years, especially last summer, which saw record melts in Greenland. 

As Gizmodo points out, though, this year's early melt exposes older dirtier snow sooner in the year than nornal. This old snow and ice can then absorb more warm sunshine during the rest of the summer than newer, whiter, fresher snow and ice would. This would bring up the risk of major melt events later in the summer. 

We should care more about Greenland's melt than Arctic Ocean melt.  If ice floating on the sea melts, it won't raise global sea levels. But ice melting off the above sea level glaciers in Greeland flow into oceans, raising their levels globally. 

Meanwhile, Siberia is once again on fire after its warmest winter and spring on record. Fires have already crept north of the Arctic Circle. Gizmodo reports there are even some "zombie fires" which smoldered in buried peat all winter and then sparked back up again amid the current record warmth in high latitude Siberia.  

TURBOCHARGED HURRICANES

Climate change appears to be making hurricanes and typhoons and such more intense, according to new research from NOAA and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Cooperative Institute for Meteorological Satellite Studies. 


"The researchers discovered that the probability of a tropical cycle having Category 3 or higher wind speeds (at least 111 mph) increased by aboug 15 percent between the first and last halves of the analyzed satellite data. This corresponds to about an 8 percent increase per decade over the period of the study. The proportion of all tropical cyclones exceeding major hurricane intensity showed a similar increase of about 6 percent per decade."

The largest increase in bad hurricanes was in the Atlantic Ocean, but other influences might have helped increase the odds of such storms, too. 

CARBON/CORONAVIRUS

Daily global emissions of carbon dioxide fell by 17 percent from the same period in 2018 as nations locked down their economies to battle the coronavirus pandemic. Most of that decrease was due to less travel and less industrial output. 

I suppose that's good news for people who are not fans of climate change, but obviously we would have all been better off without the pandemic.

Also, this cut in carbon emissions won't really dent the pace of climate change. Economies are already opening back up, and emissions will rise correspondingly.  Even a sustained 17 percent reduction in carbon emissions lasting years wouldn't really solve the problem. 

Said Richard Betts, head of Climate Impacts Research at the Met Office Hadley Centre in England said, "It's like we're filling a bath and have turned down the tap slightly, but not turned it off - the water is still rising, just not as fast. To stop the bath overflowing, we need to turn the tap off."

So yes, the world is rightly consumed with battling the pandemic, but we still need to deal pretty intensely with climate change at the same time.

Busy Atlantic Hurricane Season Ahead?

Yesterday,  I speculated about the possibility a subtropical storm forming in the Atlantic, born out of the storm that gave us Vermonters the dreary weather yesterday and today.

That's still a big question mark, but the Colorado State University Tropical Meteorology Project added fuel to the seasonal tropical expectations this year.  They're predicting a busier than normal hurricane season this summer and autumn.

They're predicting 16 named storms, compared to the normal of 12. Colorado State University says eight of those storms will be hurricanes against an average of six annually. Four of the hurricanes are predicted to be real biggies, compared to a normal of three major hurricanes.

The devil is the details, of course. Even if their forecast turns out to be spot on, Colorado State University meteorologists, or anybody else for that matter, have no idea where all these storms will form or go.

If they all somehow stay harmlessly out to sea, then it's obviously no big deal. If a lot of them start crashing onshore, especially the major hurricanes, then we have huge trouble to face.

I'm guessing you're aware there's a huge, tragic, highly disruptive pandemic going on now, and all kinds of emergency services are stretched to the breaking point. Even if the pandemic wanes over the summer - a big if - imagine trying to evacuate hundreds of thousands of people from say, Florida as a dangerous hurricane approaches.

Then deal with the aftermath - dead and injured, massive property damage, infrastructure such as roads, electricity, internet all wrecked in a big area. You can see how challenging that is in better circumstances. This is the year you really don't want to deal with this.

Last year, the United States was relatively lucky with hurricanes, even if other parts of the Atlantic Basin were clearly not so lucky.  Hurricane Dorian, which leveled parts of the Bahamas, only skirted the United States and made landfall in a weaker state in North Carolina.

Dorian did cause a lot of damage in the United States, but it could have been immensely worse. The only other highly destructive storm was Tropical Storm Imelda in Texas.  There wasn't much wind with that one, but it caused massive flooding.

We don't want years like 2017 and 2018, when destructive hurricanes hit hard in America.

One of many factors that will influence hurricanes this year is El Nino or La Ninas in the eastern Pacific. El Ninos feature warm water in parts of the eastern Pacific which help squelch Atlantic hurricanes. La Ninas, cooler water in the eastern Pacific can encourage Atlantic hurricanes.

The signals are kind of mixed this year, but feature either a situation in which there won't really be an El Nino or a La Nina. Or maybe there will be a weak La Nina.

Ocean temperatures are broadly warmer than average in the Atlantic Ocean. If that trend continues into the summer and fall, that could also encourage more and stronger tropical storms and hurricanes.

We really have to watch the Gulf of Mexico.  It's now incredibly toasty, almost at record high levels. That could change by hurricane season, but if not, that area could be a hotbed for storm development.

In the shorter term, the hot Gulf of Mexico is a potential tornado trouble maker. We're heading into peak tornado season.  A very warm Gulf would encourage warmer and more humid air than usual to make its way north into the middle of the nation.

Warmer, more humid air is one critical ingredient for severe storms.  If other conditions come together just right on occasion over the next couple of months, then tornadoes could be more destructive and frequent than usual.

Tornado season this year is already off to a bad start. So far this year there have been at least 180 tornadoes, causing 33 deaths, according to NOAA's Storm Prediction Center.

Getting back to hurricanes, the Colorado State hurricane forecast, issued Thursday, is just that, a forecast.  It's not set in stone, and like all weather predictions, especially long range forecasts, this one will surely be a little off one way or another.

Forecasters will refine tropical storm expectations as we head toward the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season.

Epic Flooding In Texas As History Repeats Itself

Once again, a slow, slow moving tropical system has unleashed another huge flood disaster.

It seems to be happening more frequently, and the results are catastrophic.

This time, it's in and around the suffering city of Beaumont, Texas.  Houston got most of the headlines from the immense rains and inundations of Hurricane Harvey in 2017. But Harvey also badly buried Beaumont in water.

In a scene reminiscent of Harvey when television station KHOU had to be evacuated mid-broadcast due to rising waters, television station KBMT, 12 News Now in Beaumont, was evacuated early this morning as water poured into offices and studios.

Television stations are often a lifeline during disasters because of the information they broadcast, so this isn't good at all.  The town of Winnie is reportedly almost entirely under water.

Rainfall rates this morning have been as high as five inches per hour in parts of the area. Rainfall totals early this morning were closing in on 30 inches.  Beaumont Police early this morning reported at least 250 water rescues and 270 requests for evacuation. They urged people to call 911 only for dire emergencies since they are so swamped with calls.

The remains of Imelda were inland over northeastern Texas this morning. It was pulling in bands of deep moisture from the Gulf of Mexico. The airflow with these bands was converging toward each other, increasing the lift in the atmosphere, intensifying the thunderstorms and unleashing incredible rains.

Early this morning, forecasts called for this situation to continue for several more hours, dropping as much as ten additional inches of rain on the flooded Beaumont area and environs.

This is the second time this hurricane season we've had a stall, with disastrous results. You'll remember Hurricane Dorian coming to a halt over the northern Bahamas, blasting them with as much as Category 5 winds for more than a day, instead of just a few hours like most hurricanes.

We had Hurricane Harvey stall in Texas two years ago, as mentioned. Florence stalled near the Carolinas in 2018, creating another flood disaster. A no-named storm in 2016 sat in Louisiana, causing record floods.

The Independent reports that NOAA and NASA researchers have seen a decrease of 17 percent in forward speed of North Atlantic tropical systems. The used to travel at a rate of 11.5 mph in 1944, but they were down to 9.6 mph by 2017.

Scientists are trying to figure out to what extent, if any, these slower storms are due to climate change. Some studies hint that the fact the Arctic is warming faster than lower latitudes is slowing upper level wind speeds, and thus slowing tropical storms, notes the Independent. 

In any event, this is the latest in a string of major flood events that have savaged parts of the nation in recent years.

Oh, by the way, flash flooding was happening again this morning in parts of Nebraska and Iowa.

Tropical Trouble All Over The Place: Texas Now The Focus

Tropical storms and hurricanes seem to be popping up all over the place, so I'm sure the people at the National Hurricane Center are wicked busy!

With the glaring exception of the upper Texas coast, there is no immediate threat to land in the United States, but plenty to watch. 

IMELDA

First let's get to that situation in Texas. As I mentioned a few days ago, it has been rather dry in and around Houston, Texas lately, so residents there at first were gratefully watching a weather disturbance move westward across the Gulf of Mexico toward them, promising some drought-busting rains.

However they do things big in Texas and the rain has become way too much of a good thing.

As the disturbance neared the Texas coast in the past couple of days, it looked more and more like a tropical storm trying to form. Things escalated quickly on Tuesday, even with prior forecasts warning of heavy rains and floods with this thing.

At around noon Tuesday, the National Hurricane Center noted the definite circulation of the storm just off the Texas coast and declared it a tropical depression. Within 45 minutes, it strengthened enough, with top winds of 40 mph, to be declared Tropical Storm Imelda.

Less than an hour after that, Imelda made landfall near Freeport, Texas.  Since it went inland, the winds weakened and it soon was back to being a tropical depression. So this was one of the shortest lives I've seen for a tropical storm in a long time.

But Imelda's rains are lasting a long time, and that's the problem.  People in Houston and much of the rest of coastal Texas are always jittery when there are flood alerts, given the extreme havoc Hurricane Harvey caused in 2017.

This situation is no Harvey, but the flooding from ex-Imelda is definitely ramping up.

According to Houston meteorologist Matt Lanza (@mattlanza) Houston as of early this morning has escaped with little flooding, though areas south of the city have had torrential rains and flash flooding.  A few spots received up to five inches of rain in an hour. Reports out of Matagorda County indicate up to 20 inches of rain already.

The rain could ramp up in Houston itself later today.

There is a flood risk in eastern Texas from the former Imelda through tomorrow.

HUMBERTO

Hurricane Humberto has really cranked up with top winds of 115 mph. It looks like it will come very close to Bermuda tonight or early tomorrow, blasting them with hurricane force winds. Then it will thankfully keep heading northeastward, further and further away from us. Good riddance!

This is a large storm, with hurricane force winds extending out 60 miles from its eye. Tropical storm-force winds go out 175 miles. Despite the fact it's missing the United States by a wide margin, there will be dangerous swells and rip currents for the next few days.

JERRY

Tropical storm Jerry formed overnight way out over the central Atlantic, way east of the Leeward Islands. It is expected to grow into a hurricane and could threaten those islands in a couple days. Beyond that, it's not known yet where it will head. Earlier indications are it will turn north before reaching the United States, but that is definitely not guaranteed.

Climate Change Future? Stuck, Dangerous Summer Weather Patterns And Southeast Hurricanes

A prolonged, possibly record strong heat wave is starting in Europe about now, which is helping lead to more discussion about whether "stuck"summer weather patterns are increasing.

These "stuck" patterns can lead to more intense heat waves than previously felt, and more serious warm season flooding than previously experienced. And, of course, climate change might be behind this phenomenon.

Obviously, there's no way scientists can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that the currently building European heat wave is "caused" by climate change. But it's consistent with what's been happening with growing frequency.

Possible examples include a deadly, summer long heat wave in Europe in 2003, and another long, fatal Russian heat wave in 2010. That same persistent weather pattern in 2010 fueled record flooding in Pakistan.

Other examples might include a 2011 Texas drought, floods across Europe in 2013, California wildfires in 2015 and 2018, and lengthy hot spells in Japan, Scandinavia, Quebec and northern New England last summer.

Climate scientists are looking at something called atmospheric  Rossby waves.  They're nothing new and totally normal. The Rossby waves help transfer heat from the tropics and cold air from the Arctic so that Earth's atmosphere can stay pretty balanced.

Rossby waves also help set in place the jet stream and lead to fairly long and persistent weather patterns.

These waves have always created "stuck" weather patterns, but with climate change, are Rossby waves somehow getting better at stalling weather patterns for longer periods of time? And making the "stuck" weather more intense?

There's usually about five to seven Rossby waves at any given time in the northern hemisphere, and they usually slowly move eastward. That's a big reason why you might get storminess for a few days, then dry and warm weather for a few days, then back to storminess.

However, it's possible that climate change might occasionally make the slow eastward motion of the Rossby waves to stop more often, setting up prolonged periods of heat under ridges in the waves, and long spells of heavy precipitation and flooding near the dips.

Large temperature constrasts between land and ocean might encourage Rossby waves to stall, and some climate models suggest these contrasts will get more extreme and more frequent, which would stall Rossby waves.

I know this is all weedy and technical, but it's one reason why climate scientists say the world isn't just warming up, but the weather is tending to get more extreme

SOUTHEAST HURRICANES

Often a big strong hurricane approaching the southeastern United States coast will weaken somewhat before getting to that region.

That's because hurricanes moving north from the tropics are likely to encounter wind shear. Wind shear is a change in wind direction and/or speed as you go up in elevation. Wind shear tends to tear hurricanes apart.

For people who live in the Southeast, that's a good thing. You'd want weaker hurricanes.

However, according to the Category 6 blog,  recent studies suggest that wind shear over the Southeastern United States during hurricane season will weaken over time, which would open the door for stronger hurricanes to hit the Southeast.

That even has implications for us up north. If the hurricane continues north, it might encounter wind shear later than it would have in a cooler climate, making the storm likely to be stronger as it got to New England.

On the bright side, the same study suggests climate change might increase wind shear in the deeper tropics, maybe making it less likely that strong hurricanes could develop in the first place.

Not all weird weather is attributable to climate change. There have always been oddball storms and record temperatures. However, climate change might be influencing these events. Like all picky details regarding climate change, this whole thing needs more study and review.

Weather Geek Out: Time Lapse Satellite View Of Hurricane Season

idea. The ebb and flow of Atlantic hurricanes is a sight to behold.
NOAA recently put out a time lapse satellite view of the Atlantic Ocean in which you can watch the progress of all the tropical storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic basin during 2018.

That's the point of the video, anyway.

But it's mesmerizing to watch the flow of clouds across much of North America, the Atlantic and extreme western Europe. The air really acts like a fluid.

A time stamp in the upper right hand corner tells you what time of year you're in. Early in the video, clusters of thunderstorms keep popping up in the Plains, like premature Fourth of July fireworks. That's typical of that time of year.

The hurricane season got off to a slow start. You can see why. A milky haze is seen coming off the west coast of Africa in July. That's dust from the Sahara Desert, which helps suppress tropical storms.

At roughly the same time, you see a conveyor belt of clouds repeated moving northward along the United States East Coast, contributing to a record wet year in the Mid-Atlantic states

Later, when the Sahara dust diminishes,  you see Hurricane Florence making its long journey across the Atlantic Ocean toward North Carolina. You see how Florence moved in fits and starts, organizing, weakening, starting to head north, then changing its mind and beelining toward North Carolina.

Powerful hurricane Michael looks almost like an afterthought on satellite. It was a terribly powerful, destructive storm, but in the grand scheme of things, didn't have a particularly long life. At the same time that Michael was raising havoc, Leslie in the central Atlantic danced and swirled around aimlessly seemingly endlessly looping around out there before finally giving up the ghost and heading toward Portugal.

Even if you're not into weather like I am, the video is worth watching. In a stressful time of year, the ebb and flow of the clouds in the video is soothing. Which is ironic, since hurricanes are anything but soothing.

Big Pattern Change Will Bring Cold Reality To Us Vermonters Next Weekend

this month, but in a about a week, I suspect there might be a little
snow or rime ice at the very top of the peak. 
It's going to be quite a warm week through Thursday here in the North Country, but don't get used to it. Winter is coming fast, and we will get a seasonable mini-taste of it by next weekend.

It's dank and drizzly today, and it will likely stay that way into Monday. But temperatures are at or a little above normal.

Tuesday and Wednesday will basically be Indian Summer, with highs right up there in the 70s.

Nights will be particularly warm. It'll be the last chance to keep windows open at night as lows will bottom out Tuesday and Wednesday nights to just around 60 degrees.

That's roughly normal for mid-summer.

Warmth has mostly dominated since May, and especially since late June, whe a northward bulge in the jet stream seemed to become almost permanent over the eastern United States.

This ridge will break down later this week to be replaced by a big dip, or trough in the jet stream.

This means it will turn cold. The details are still scant, but the upcoming chill doesn't look very out of the ordinary for mid-October. But it will be something we're not used to.

There's a good chance of hard freezes at night, and maybe a little snow on the mountain tops. It's unclear how long this cool or cold trend will last. But autumn is a season of see-saw ups and downs.

I'm betting we'll alternate between warm spells and increasingly harsh cold spells as we hurtle toward winter.

That's just the breaks here.

At least we here in Vermont aren't going to suffer through any kinds of dangerous or too-abrupt extremes this week.

The Central Plains and parts of the Midwest are in for some pretty bad flash flooding. During this week, especially today through Wednesday, a swath from Texas to Wisconsin is expecting three to seven inches of rain, with higher amounts in some spots.

This rain will fall on ground already saturated by a soggy late summer and fall. Lots of flooding is going to happen.

Meanwhile, a few spots in the northern Rockes, adjacent High Plains and the Black Hills of South Dakota are getting some fairly persistent snow over the next few days.

And a tropical storm or hurricane is likely to hit the Gulf Coast Wednesday or Thursday.

Yeah, good times.

Today Is Peak Of Hurricane Season. This Year, It REALLY Is

Today, September 10, is often regarded as the exact peak of hurricane season in the Atlantic basin. If you're going to have hurricanes, this is the date they are probably most likely.

This year, today, we've got three of them: Florence, Helene and Isaac. All full-fledged hurricanes.

Obviously, Florence is the one everybody really has their eyes on because it's such a threat to the East Coast. But we'll break things down one by one.

I'll get into Florence in a minute, but first, some more local weather for today:

EX-GORDON

The remains of Tropical Storm Gordon remain embedded in a storm system that was around Pennslyvania this morning. Much of that state is under flood warnings due to the heavy rain with this system. It's been a terrible summer in Pennsylvania. Every time I turn around, there's another flood there.

One example: Harrisburg, Pennsylvania has had about 47 inches of rain so far this year. That's about 19 inches more than they should have had by now.

Luckily for Pennsylvania, Ex-Gordon should start to move out of Pennsylvania later today. Luckily for us Vermonters, Ex-Gordon still looks like it's going to hit us later today and tonight.

We so desperately need the rain, and this will be a good one. Instead of short, sharp bursts of torrential rain we've had in scattered thunderstorms all summer, this storm will involve at least 12 consecutive hours of steady light to moderate rain.

That's the kind of rain that soaks into the ground nicely. Most of us here in Vermont can expect one to two inches of rain, with locally more in southern Vermont.

Enjoy the rain while you can. Despite this storm, we're still in the overall pattern we've had all summer, with a high pressure ridge in the upper atmosphere near or over us. After the rain tapers off Tuesday morning, expect no more precipitation at least through Sunday.

FLORENCE MENACES

Hurricane Florence, as expected, was rapidly intensifying this morning. Top sustained winds were at 105 mph early this morning, but those are expected to go up to a terrifying 150 mph by Wednesday.

The expected path of Florence hasn't changed much since yesterday, and at the moment, North Carolina seems to be in Florence's crosshairs. The path could still shift to the north or south before we get to Thursday, when the hurricane is expected to make landfall.

Most forecasters expect Florence to still be a major, dangerous hurricane by the time it reaches North Carolina or thereabouts. There is a chance strong upper level winds could weaken Florence just before it reaches shore, but that won't matter much.

Sure, weakening, if it happens, will reduce wind damage somewhat. But the principal threat from Florence, and any other landfalling hurricane for that matter, is a coastal storm surge and inland flooding.

Weakening might or might not happen, but either way, coastal areas will see severe storm surges. Florence is also still expected to slow down or stall once it gets inland a bit, which will trigger massive amounts of rain with potentially catastrophic flooding.

People in the Carolinas are already preparing for this mess, as well they should be. Things are not looking good.

HURRICANE HELENE

Helene is expected to be comparatively well behaved. It's way out over the eastern Atlantic Ocean, with top winds of about 85 mph. Happily, Helene is expected to turn toward due north, far away from any major land areas. Once it goes north Helene will weaken and die by next week over colder North Atlantic waters. Buh-bye!

WILDCARD ISAAC

Hurricane Isaac, with top winds of 75 mph, is expected to strengthen, at least temporarily as it heads due west toward the Lesser Antilles islands and eventually the Caribbean Sea. Forecasters are prett confident that Isaac will keep heading nearl due west, but nobody can agree on whether it will strengthen or weaken, or when any of those trends might happen.

Isaac is small in size, so it's prone to rapid changes in intensity. Many computer models have it weakening to a tropical storm once it's in the Caribbean. Other models turn it into a monster. We'll see how that goes.

On top of all this, Hurricane Olivia is still threatening Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean. And a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico might or might not develop into something in the coming days.

Florence And All Kinds Of Tropical Threats

You'll have to forgive me, but this blog will be mostly about tropical storms and hurricanes for awhile as the peak of hurricane season has hit with a vengeance.

It was supposed to be a quiet year for hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean, but for the time being, it's most certainly not.

There's all kinds of things to talk about. The eastern Pacific Ocean is a mess, too, with tropical storms and hurricanes buzzing around.

So let's get to it with our Saturday update:

EX-TROPICAL STORM GORDON

As I expected, the remains of Tropical Storm Gordon is causing a LOT more trouble than it did when it was an actual tropical storm along the Gulf Coast several days ago.

The former Gordon is dumping horrible amounts of rain in the Midwest, and this trend will continue big time today. A weather front associated with ex-Gordon is spreading downpours into the already soggy Middle Atlantic states too. This is bad, because that could be setting the stage for cataclysmic flooding if Hurricane Florence comes along later next week. (More on that in a minute.)

There's a high risk of flooding in parts of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio today, which is the top level alert put out by NOAA's Weather Prediction Center when it assesses flood risks.

Four to eight inches of rain is expected today in much of this region, which has had repeated bouts of downpours over the past few weeks. Flooding is basically inevitable, and it could easily become severe and life threatening.

Gordon's flood threat will likely extend more into Ohio and Pennsylvania tomorrow. 

As noted yesterday, Ex-Gordon will actually be good for us here in Vermont. Forecasters are hopeful that it will dump one to two inches of rain on the drought landscape of central and northern Vermont Monday and Monday night.

The storm could also cause some gusty winds along the west slopes of the Green Mountains. That might cause a couple branches and maybe an isolated power failure or two, but with the rain, it will be worth it.

HURRICANE FLORENCE

As noted yesterday, high upper level winds did a number on Hurricane Florence, reducing it to a sloppy mess of a tropical storm with top winds of only 60 mph.

restrengthen, possibly rapidly. 
Those upper level winds are easing this morning, and Florence is definitely reviving, according to this morning's statement from the National Hurricane Center. 

Strong thunderstorms near the core of the storm are growing, and Florence is getting more organized again. It will almost certainly be a hurricane again by tomorrow.

Florence is heading westward into a zone with light upper level winds and hot ocean water. This is a perfect environment for hurricanes and Florence is expected to intensify quickly.

It could even achieve Category 5 status - the strongest and most dangerous hurricane type possible.

Which puts the East Coast in the United States in peril. Florence has certainly been unpredictable, but  at the moment, all guidance wants to push Florence toward the East Coast. It's still impossible to know whether it will plow ashore or curve to the north and miss the United States for a close miss.

If it does crash ashore, nobody is sure where. The first guess right now is somewhere near the Carolinas but that's iffy. If it does threaten the United States, it won't be until near the end of this coming week. Stay tuned on this one, because it has the potential to turn into another hurricane nightmare for the United States.

By the way, nobody has any idea whether Florence will have any effects here in Vermont.

TROPICAL STORM HELENE

This time of year, disturbances come off the west coast of Africa and then move westward into the open Atlantic. Often, a few days after they leave Africa, these disturbances become tropical storms or hurricanes.

It's very rare that a disturbance will turn into a tropical storm almost immediately after leaving Africa, but Tropical Storm Helene has done just that. It's still only got winds of 45 mph, but Helene is expected to strengthen rapidly into a hurricane.

The good news is early indications are the Helene will curve to the north far out over the Atlantic Ocean and miss most populated areas.  Of course, we originally thought Florence would do that, so it's worth it to keep a watch on Helene.

TROPICAL DEPRESSION NINE

Another disturbance moved off the west African Coast a few days ago and it's now getting its act together to the west of Helene. It's now called Tropical Depression Nine, but will soon be named Tropical Storm Isaac.

This one really bears watching. It's expected to move pretty much due west over the next five days and approach the Lesser Antilles Islands in about five to six days as a hurricane. From there, it's anybody's guess, but this one could threaten ultimately threaten places like Puerto Rico again. (ugh!) and possibly the mainland United States.

It's too soon to speculate, but this could be a worrisome one.  There is plenty of time for it to decide to miss land, so we don't have to panic over Isaac yet.

HURRICANE OLIVIA

Meanwhile, in the Pacific Ocean, Hurricane Olivia is spinning way out there with maximum sustained winds of 90 mph as of this morning. It's slowly weakening, but still could approach Hawaii early next week, so we'll have to watch that.

Atlantic Hurricane Season Has Been Mercifully Quiet, But..... Also, Another Vermont Heat Record

During most days in the past two weeks the National Hurricane Center home page has chirped that there were no tropical cyclones expected in the immediate future in the Atlantic Ocean.

That was welcome news after last year. We're now getting into the peak of hurricane season, and unlike last year's devastation, it's been pretty mellow in the Atlantic Ocean.

For so many days in late August, the National Hurricane Center Atlantic Ocean Tropical Outlook kept saying that no tropical activity was expected in the next day or two.

That's a marked contrast to last August, when all those super hurricanes, Harvey, Irma and Maria, were ongoing or about to rev up to cause extreme devastation. It's been a nice August in that respect.

Now, signs are emerging that the Atlantic is waking up, just in time for the true peak of the hurricane season. At this point, nobody is sure what will happen in the next month regarding tropical storms and hurricanes. It seems clear things are about to start forming, but whether they hit, where they hit, and how bad they will be if they do hit is totally an open question.

Computer models are hinting at a fair amount of activity. As Dr. Rick Knabb, the hurricane expert at the Weather Channel tweeted on Thursday: "When models start suggesting tropical cyclone many days in advance in multiple parts of the Atlantic basin, while they might not be right about exactly when and where, it does indicate that the atmosphere is changing and it's about to get busy overall in September."

Factors that were working against the development of hurricanes in the Atlantic are starting to wane.  Water temperatures in a broad area of the Atlantic where many destructive hurricanes form, off the west coast of Africa, had been cooler than normal.

Cooler water inhibits the development of tropical storms. By the way, water temperatures there were above normal last August in September, which partly explains why 2017 was such a destructive hurricane season.

In recent days, that water has warmed up to levels that are close to normal for this time of hear.

Additional, wind shear over the Caribbean Sea and other parts of the Atlantic was stronger than normal and are now subsiding to near normal levels for this time of year. Wind shear consists of strong upper level winds. These strong winds tear tropical storms and hurricanes apart, and prevent new ones from forming.

Strong wind shear is why Hurricane Lane, a dangerous hurricane, abruptly fell apart south of Hawaii last week. Those strong high level winds tore it to shreds.

A few areas are being watched in particular. The Gulf of Mexico over the past few days has been bubbling with numerous thunderstorms. That indicates the air is unstable over the Gulf, and that could, maybe produce a tropical storm.

A tropical wave, which is an area of thunderstorms that doesn't have any kind of real circulation, was over the Lesser Antilles Thursday. That would could develop as it heads to the west or northwest.

Finally, another tropical wave is about to emerge off the west coast of Africa. That is very likely to develop into a tropical storm and threaten the Cabo Verde Islands in the eastern Atlantic in the coming days.

We're lucky hurricanes weren't developing in July and August. The weather pattern that brought copious amounts of heat and humidity, plus drenching, flood producing rains along much of the East Coast, would have steered tropical storms right into this area, making the flooding exponentially worse than it was.

It's possible this dangerous weather pattern, which is still sort of, kinda in place, could really re-establish itself, which would put the East Coast in danger. This is purely speculation an NOT a forecast, so don't let me get you into a tizzy. I'll tell if and when it's time to panic. Better yet, the National Weather Service would tell you all this.

ANOTHER HEAT RECORD

Burlington, Vermont hit another milestone in its record hot summer. The temperature there Wednesday reached 97 degrees, breaking the record high for the date set in 1977.

This would have been the hottest temperature in Burlington for so late in the season if not for a heat wave in September 2002 that brought a temperature of 98 to the Queen City.

Wednesday's  97 is also tied for the hottest temperature of the year in this hot summer.

Other record highs on Wednesday included 95 degrees in Plattsburgh, New York and 76 degrees top Mount Mansfield, Vermont.

There were only a handful of reports of minor damage from borderline severe thunderstorms yesterday afternoon and evening. There reports of trees down near Chazy, New York and in Essex County, Vermont.

An isolated storm at midafternoon came over my place in St. Albans. We went from sun to stormy gusts in the 45 mph range and then sun once again within 10 minutes.  A dead tree fell onto my yard causing no damage. A few small branches came down in St. Albans and Fairfield. No biggie.

If you stepped outside the this morning, you'll notice how refreshingly cool it is. Today and tomorrow will easily be the "coldest" two day stretch of this August. Highs today will only be in the low 70s, and tonight will get down into the 40s, with low 50s closer to Lake Champlain.

Friday looks great, too, with continued low humidity and high temperatures in the 70s. By the way, such weather is normal for this time of year. August, 2018 will definitely go down as the hottest on record.

Enjoy while you can, because the warmth and humidity will return by Sunday and continue into at least the first part of next week. Although it won't be as hot as it's been recently, the humidity will surely be uncomfortable.

Hurricane Bud In Pacific, And Are Hurricanes Getting Even Wetter?

The second Category 4 hurricane in a week is spinning off the west coast of Mexico this morning. Unlike last week's Aletta, this new one might actually do some damage.  Mostly from flooding.

And it could even wet some of the deserts of the American Southwest. Here are some details:

HURRICANE BUD

It's got an interesting name - Hurricane Bud - and it might sideswipe Cabo San Lucas later this week. By then, Bud's winds will have diminished to nothing too spectacular at all, but it could easily create a lot of heavy rain and flooding in southwestern Mexico, including the Baja Peninsula.

As of this morning, maximum sustained winds were 130 mph with Hurricane Bud, but it's moving northwest into cooler waters, which will start that weakening trend.

However, heavy rains often linger with the remains of hurricanes long after they weaken. Bud wil be no exception.  It will probably still be a tropical storm when it reaches Baja California, and then soak western Mexico with up to 10 inches of rain. Flash flooding is a very good bet in that neck of the woods.

It looks as if moisture from Bud will make it all the way up into Arizona and Mexico. On one hand, this is good. The Southwest has been plagued by wildfires pretty much the entire spring, and some nice rains will help. This system might give Tucson and Phoenix their first rains in three months. 

On the other hand, it doesn't take much rain in the deserts to set off flash flooding, and some of the downpours associated with the  remains of Hurricane Bud at the end of the week could cause some local high water in Arizona and New Mexico.

GULF OF MEXICO STIRRING

Hurricane experts are watching an area of disturbed weather in the Caribbean Sea east of Central America that is likely to eventually drift north. Once it hits the Gulf of Mexico, there is a chance - albeit rather slight at this point - that it could become a tropical storm.

Even if it doesn't, this storminess will bring a slug of heavy rain somewhere into the Gulf Coast toward the weekend or early next week. At this point the target area for the potential heavy rain seems to be Texas and/or Louisiana, but we'll have to wait and see on that.

While nobody is hitting the panic button over potential flooding yet, this kind of thing makes people in and around Houston nervous, given the catastrophe of last year's Hurricane Harvey flooding there.

HURRICANES GETTING WETTER?

Hurricanes, tropical storms, tropical depressions and the remnants of dead and dying tropical systems almost alway dump heavy rains wherever they go. Inland flooding is often the biggest risks of tropical systems. Note Harvey, mentioned above.

New research into hurricanes are leading to worries about heavier rains and worsening floods from future tropical systems.

The journal Nature reports on findings that hurricanes in general are traveling at a forward speed of 10 percent slower than 70 years ago.

That's bad because the longer a hurricane stays over an area, battering from wind and waves will also last longer. Worse, the heavy rains will go on in any one place for a greater period of time, resulting in worse floods than if the hurricane raced past a particular locations.

Some hurricanes have always slowed down and stalled. Again, witness Harvey in Texas last year. However, it looks like these stalls and decelerations with hurricanes are happening more often.

Once again, we can blame climate change. As NPR reports:

"Climate change is causing the poles to become warmer, which in turn affects the atmospheric pressure. There is less and less difference in pressure between the poles and the tropics, and that causes the big currents of wind between the two areas to slow down. 

Storms ride on those currents of wind, like a boat in a stream."

Which means if the winds carrying tropical systems slow down, so will the hurricanes. Just another reason to dread hurricane season, huh?

Tropics Starting To Bubble Before Hurricane Season Even Hits

Last year in the Atlantic Ocean, the hurricane season was horrific.

Harvey. Irma. Maria. I shudder just thinking about those deadly, destructive storms.

Hurricane season starts May 15 in the eastern Pacific Ocean and June 1 in the Atlantic Ocean, but there are already signs that things might start to get active soon, even before the officials start of the tropical storm season.

There won't be anything like Harvey or Maria in the near future, thank goodness, but there a couple things worth watching

There's a decent chance a tropical storm could form in the eastern Pacific, off the coast of Mexico in the coming days. Most of storms that form there don't hit land but a few do. If this particular disturbance forms, it will be the second year in a row a tropical storm formed there before the May 15 "official" start to the season.

In any event, if this storm gets going, forecasters say it won't last long and won't hit land.

Meanwhile, in the Atlantic, some computer models are suggesting something might get going in the western Caribbean Sea late next week. I'm not counting on it though. Other computer models have nothing there next week.

However, water temperatures in the western Caribbean are warmer than normal for this time of year and are toasty enough to support tropical storms. Also, this time of year, the jet stream is usually far enough south to rip apart any tropical storms that try to form in the Caribbean, but the jet stream is expected to be further north than usual for a time next week, which could offer a window for tropical storm development.

Off the coast of Chile, a subtropical storm formed this week. That's very rare, since ocean waters off the Chilean coast are usually too cold to support any kind of tropical system. (Tropical storms and hurricanes need very warm water to form and thrive.)

Subtropical storms have characteristics of both tropical storms and normal average everyday storm systems.

Such a storm had not been seen off the coast of Chile until now. Some may have formed in the past, though, before there was decent satellite imagery coming from that area in the southern hemisphere.

Even if the hurricane season gets off to an early start, that doesn't necessarily mean this will be a busy, destructive season. It's partly a matter of luck. If any big hurricanes form, will they stay out to sea or hit land?  Will weather conditions and water temperatures conspire to give birth to lots of storms later this year? Nobody knows for sure.

For what it's worth, Colorado State University puts out hurricane season forecasts every year, and they're predicting a slightly above normal season in the Atlantic. The Weather Company, parent of the Weather Channel, predicts a near average season. 

One thing to note: Some of last year's most destructive Atlantic hurricanes developed explosively. They went from nothingburgers to monsters in days or even hours.   Some scientists are saying this kind of rapid, dangerous development could become more common as oceans warm under the influence of global warming.

Meanwhile, we're in the heart of the severe storm and tornado season in the United States. So far, it hasn't been too bad. As of today, there have been 317 reports of tornadoes in the United States in 2018. That sounds like a lot, but it's actually below average.

Maybe that trend will continue?

Last Year Was The Costliest On Record For Weather Disasters.

A few days ago, the Category 6 weather blog issued their annual assessment of big weather disasters for the past year across the globe. As you would expect 2017 was not a good year.

That applies both for the United States in particular and the world in general.

There were 29 events costing at least a billion dollars in damage. That number is not a record high for all years. (adjusted for inflation.) Five other years had more billion dollar disasters.

However, some of the disasters were extremely expensive, so 2017 was the costliest on record, for the world as a whole and the United States in particular.

If you're into America First I have good/bad news for you. The United States had more billion dollar disasters than any other country, according to insurance broker Aon Benfield. 

The good ole' US of A had 16 weather disasters with at least a billion dollars in damage. The country that came in Number 2 was China, with four such disasters.

Overall, weather disasters during 2017 in the United States cost $306 billion, definitely a new record.   The hurricanes and wildfires got most of the headlines, and caused most of the expense. But there were other billion dollar plus weather disasters in the United States last year, including a drought in the Dakotas, floods in Missouri and Arkansas, and hail in Texas and Oklahoma.

Before you right off this report as another climate change screed, do know that it's apparent that climate change was only one factor that made 2017 so expensive.

Worldwide and in the United States, general wealth has increased. So when things are destroyed in a weather disaster, the tally is more expensive.

Likely a bigger factor in all these monetary losses is that more and more people live in places that are prone to big disasters. For instance, people flock to places along or near coastllines, many of which are sitting ducks for hurricanes.

Which helps explain why hurricanes Irma and Harvey were so expensive in the United States.

Wildfires contributed to the expensive tally in the United States. Again, more and more of us are getting in the way of these things. People keep building houses in and along the edges of the wilderness, for instance.   Some of the damage from two billion plus dollar wildfire disasters was because houses and businesses were newly located in these interface regions.

As noted, tornadoes, flash floods  and severe thunderstorms factored into the expensive 2017. Again, part of the problem is our habits. In the olden days, cities and towns were concentrated in pretty small areas. Now, urban and suburban sprawl extends over so many more square miles than it used to.

Tornadoes and severe thunderstorms are pretty narrow. When you had compact cities and towns, the targets were small. Tornadoes would often miss these communities and instead blast through rural farmland.

With suburbs extending further and further out from central cities the target is larger. Tornadoes used to need to be precise to wreck a community. Now, all they have to do is figuratively hit the broad side of a barn to cause a lot of destruction.

Still, climate change is certainly still a factor in some of these disasters. For instance, it's definitely possible the downpours with Hurricane Harvey in Texas were heavier than they otherwise would have been without climate change. 

Harvey would have caused immense property damage with or without climate change, but the extra rain likely made things worse.

Those fires in California were probably made worse with climate change as well. True, the state's population increased and more people were in the way of the wildfires than decades ago. But California's extreme weather - drought to heavy rain last winter back to drought this year - increased the amount of dry vegetation that could catch fire.

Plus, the winter rains that normally hit California have largely failed to materialize, contributing to the fire problems.

I mentioned that 2017 didn't have the most $1 billion disasters in history, but it was the most expensive year.

Here's the major reason why:  Incredibly, according to Aon Benfield, and this is pretty wild, three of the five most expensive weather disasters in world history occurred in 2017. 

The figures, again adjusted for inflation, show that Hurricane Harvey was the second most expensive disaster, with $100 billion in losses. (Number 1 was 2005's Hurricane Katrina, with $161 billion in inflation-adjusted losses.

Also in 2017, Hurricane Maria was the fourth most expesnive disaster with $65 billion in losses. Hurricane Irma was fifth, with $55 billion in damage. (Number 3 was Hurricane Sandy in 2012, with $70 billion in losses.

About 10,000 people died in natural disasters, including earthquakes, in 2017. That sounds absolutely terrible and it is. Still, if you want a silver lining, the number of deaths from these disasters in 2017 was definitely below the 2001-2016 average of 71,000 fatalities.

The worst single disaster, in terms of fatalities, was a landslide in Sierra Leone caused by a flood, About 1,100 people died in that one. The death toll from Hurricane Maria is still hard to come by, but that storm might have killed 1,000 or so people.

And by the way, yes, I'm accusing the Trump administration of helping to cover up the number of deaths in Puerto Rico from Maria. Public relations,  is of utmost importance to Trump, even more so than human lives. Or facts for that matter.

The worst disasters, as I noted, hit the United States. While there was an unacceptably high death toll in these U.S. disasters, we do have an excellent National Weather Service and plenty of other non-govermental meteorologists who got people out of the way of impending doom, thus saving lots of lives.

If you were lucky enough to escape damage from 2017's weather disasters, I still have some bad news. You still might end up paying.

According to PRI:

"Insurers are going to start passing these consts on to policyholders......People living in places that are at high risk for fires are going to end up seeing higher costs because that's the only way insurance companies can afford to cover increased damage."

It's not just fires. Insurance costs might go up because of payouts for other calamities, like floods, hail and the like.

Here in New England, we weren't really ground zero for any billion dollar disaster in 2017, but we did have expensive weather issues. One of the biggest were severe storms, tornadoes and flooding in New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine on June 30 and July 1. The other big, expensive weather issue in the region was the severe windstorm and flooding in late October.

I have to say 2018 is totally off to a bad start in the billion dollar disaster department. We're barely into February, and there are at least a couple contenders for billion dollar losses. One of them was a nor'easter in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada in early JanuaryThat storm caused immense coastal flooding and other losses due to high winds and snow.

Also in January, there were two epic wind storms in western Europe, either one of which might have caused more than a billion dollars in losses.

And by the way, spring, summer and early autumn in the Northern Hemisphere seem to garner the most terrible disasters. More people live in the north than in the south. Spring, summer and early autumn in the Northern Hemisphere is the most likely season for expensive, fatal disasters like tornado outbreaks, hail and severe thunderstorms, serious floods, wildfires and hurricanes.

Geeky But Wicked Cool NASA Video Shows Sea Salt, Smoke And Hurricane Interaction

I just came across a cool visualization video that shows how aerosols in the atmosphere such as sea salt, smoke from wild fires and dust from the Sahara Desert interact and move around the world.

I know, I know, it sounds just a bit dull and science-y, but definitely watch the video at the bottom of this post. It's mesmerizing. Even to people who aren't weather geeks.

Says NASA:

"This visualization uses data from NASA satellites, combined with mathematical models in a computer simulation (that) allows scientists to study physical processes in our atmosphere. By following the sea salt that is evaporated from the oceans, you can see the storms of the 2017 hurricane season."

That is perhaps the most striking feature of the video. You can see high concentrations of salt gathered up in strengthening and strong hurricanes like Harvey, Irma, Maria and Ophelia.

A unique feature of Ophelia that you can see in the video is how it sucked up sea salt, like all hurricanes do, but also Saharan dust and smoke from deadly wildfires in Portugal, and that helps explain the odd smoky skies over Britain as Ophelia and its post-tropical remnants blustered through.

Another fascinating part of the video is how you can see wildfires break out in western and northern Canada, and in the western United States, then watch the smoke blow across the continent and over to  Europe and Asia.

The erupting wildfires are seen as dense pinpoint plumes of smoke before the smoke and ash disperse over wide areas.

The video sure helps explain why the sky was so often hazy and smoky over Vermont in August and September. A lot of wildfire smoke blew our way.

Smoke from the increasing trend of wildfires is raising health concerns as all the additional smoke from longer and more intense fire seasons is affecting human health, especially in areas relatively close to the fires.

You'll probably want to watch the video repeatedly to catch all the activity going on with the hurricanes, salt and smoke.

Will Hurricanes Migrate North With Climate Change?

As expected, ex-hurricane Ophelia trashed Ireland with strong, damaging winds Monday, killing at least three people, unroofing buildings, tossing down countless trees and leaving more than 360,000 people with electricity.

Was Ophelia a rare one-off, just one of those storms that were still almost hurricanes by the time it reached Europe?  After all, this has happened before, with Debbie in 1961 being the most cited example.

However, there are indications that with global warming, hurricanes are drifting further and further north. These storms thrive on warm water. If warm water is further north, the logic goes, hurricanes would go further north, too.

This has implications for Europe, of course. If a storm retains hurricane status further north, then the storm's inevitable transition to non-tropical storm status would come further north. But that poleward shift means these storms would be stronger than they would be had they lost their tropical characteristics further south.

Is Europe due for a lot more Ophelias? The jury is out, but the signs are there. A 2014 University of Wisconsin study noted there has been a "pronounced poleward migration in the average latitude at which tropical cyclones have achieved their lifetime maximum intensity over the past 30 years."

If global warming brings tropical storms and hurricanes further north, that has implications for us New Englanders.

Of course, we are already sometimes hit by hurricanes and tropical storms - even major ones. The Great Hurricane of 1938 was Category 3 when it reached Long Island and New England, killing more than 600 people.

Even weaker tropical storms can wreak havoc. Just ask any Vermonter who had to deal with the flooding from Tropical Storm Irene in 2011.

However, tropical storms and hurricanes, even ones that reach New England and southeastern Canada, usually weaken as they approach because the waters off the Northeast coast are cool. Remember, hurricanes need very warm water.

If ocean waters off the coasts of New England and Canada warm, perhaps this weakening trend in most northward moving tropical storms and hurricanes could lessen, creating more powerful storms for us.

Some studies suggest New England could be more prone to tropical storms and hurricanes in a warmer future, but more research is definitely needed to confirm this.

That future is not cast in stone. More research is needed. But it is something to consider.

Weird Hurricane Ophelia, And No End To California Fire Catastrophe

As we've watched the fires rage in California (I'll have an update further down in this post and the news is terrible) we also have another hurricane out in the Atlantic Ocean.

OPHELIA

Tropical Storm Ophelia strengthened into a hurricane yesterday and it's in a weird place. Ophelia is in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, well off the coast of Morocco, which is awfully far north and east for an Atlantic hurricane.

It's heading northeast, and oddly, could hit Ireland of all places. Ophelia will be transitioning from a tropical system to a plain old mid-latitude storm by the time it nears Ireland, but that doesn't make much of a difference as to what will happen.

Ophelia, or ex-Ophelia will be a very powerful storm once it blows by Ireland Monday or Tuesday, so we they are bracing for possible wind damage as gusts could easily exceed 80 mph on the Emerald Isle.

Although storms that are just completing transitions from hurricanes are rare in Great Britain, they have happened. According to the Category 6 weather blog, something like this happened in Ireland back in 1961, when Hurricane Debbie caused one of the most damaging wind storms in Irish history. Some sections of the country lost 25 percent of their trees with Debbie.

Ophelia has also tied another record for the Atlantic Basin. It's the 10th consecutive tropical storm that strengthened into a hurricane. That ties the record for the most consecutive hurricanes set in 1878, 1886 and 1893.

And remember, back in the 1800s, we didn't have satellites, so we might have missed a weaker tropical storm in between all the hurricanes that happened in those years.

So yeah, you can definitely say the 2017 hurricane season in the Atlantic has been pretty extreme. On the bright side, there's no immediate signs of any other new tropical storms or hurricanes forming in the Atlantic in the next seveal days.

CALIFORNIA FIRES

The situation with the wildfires in California just keeps getting worse and worse and the weather shows no signs of giving the state a break, at least through Saturday.

As expected, winds picked up and the humidity dropped in northern California yesterday and last night, and the fires resumed their rapid spread.

At last check, the death toll had risen to 23, more people were missing and 3,500 homes have been destroyed. More homes are going to go.

Some of the fires are still completely out of control and all authorities can do at this point is try to evacuate people in the paths of the fires.

It's still breezy today, and after a slight lull in the winds tonight, it's going to get nearly as windy and dry Friday and Saturday as it was Sunday night, when the worst of the fires started.

Trouble is going to spread to the Los Angeles area, too, as hot, dry, strong Santa Ana winds are forecast to fan existing and new fires Friday and Saturday.

Back up in the San Francisco Bay Area, smoke from the fires has created an air quality crisis. Pollution levels set records in San Francisco and flights were delayed Wednesday for up to three hours due to the poor visibility in the smoke.
