Last Year Was The Costliest On Record For Weather Disasters.

A few days ago, the Category 6 weather blog issued their annual assessment of big weather disasters for the past year across the globe. As you would expect 2017 was not a good year.

That applies both for the United States in particular and the world in general.

There were 29 events costing at least a billion dollars in damage. That number is not a record high for all years. (adjusted for inflation.) Five other years had more billion dollar disasters.

However, some of the disasters were extremely expensive, so 2017 was the costliest on record, for the world as a whole and the United States in particular.

If you're into America First I have good/bad news for you. The United States had more billion dollar disasters than any other country, according to insurance broker Aon Benfield. 

The good ole' US of A had 16 weather disasters with at least a billion dollars in damage. The country that came in Number 2 was China, with four such disasters.

Overall, weather disasters during 2017 in the United States cost $306 billion, definitely a new record.   The hurricanes and wildfires got most of the headlines, and caused most of the expense. But there were other billion dollar plus weather disasters in the United States last year, including a drought in the Dakotas, floods in Missouri and Arkansas, and hail in Texas and Oklahoma.

Before you right off this report as another climate change screed, do know that it's apparent that climate change was only one factor that made 2017 so expensive.

Worldwide and in the United States, general wealth has increased. So when things are destroyed in a weather disaster, the tally is more expensive.

Likely a bigger factor in all these monetary losses is that more and more people live in places that are prone to big disasters. For instance, people flock to places along or near coastllines, many of which are sitting ducks for hurricanes.

Which helps explain why hurricanes Irma and Harvey were so expensive in the United States.

Wildfires contributed to the expensive tally in the United States. Again, more and more of us are getting in the way of these things. People keep building houses in and along the edges of the wilderness, for instance.   Some of the damage from two billion plus dollar wildfire disasters was because houses and businesses were newly located in these interface regions.

As noted, tornadoes, flash floods  and severe thunderstorms factored into the expensive 2017. Again, part of the problem is our habits. In the olden days, cities and towns were concentrated in pretty small areas. Now, urban and suburban sprawl extends over so many more square miles than it used to.

Tornadoes and severe thunderstorms are pretty narrow. When you had compact cities and towns, the targets were small. Tornadoes would often miss these communities and instead blast through rural farmland.

With suburbs extending further and further out from central cities the target is larger. Tornadoes used to need to be precise to wreck a community. Now, all they have to do is figuratively hit the broad side of a barn to cause a lot of destruction.

Still, climate change is certainly still a factor in some of these disasters. For instance, it's definitely possible the downpours with Hurricane Harvey in Texas were heavier than they otherwise would have been without climate change. 

Harvey would have caused immense property damage with or without climate change, but the extra rain likely made things worse.

Those fires in California were probably made worse with climate change as well. True, the state's population increased and more people were in the way of the wildfires than decades ago. But California's extreme weather - drought to heavy rain last winter back to drought this year - increased the amount of dry vegetation that could catch fire.

Plus, the winter rains that normally hit California have largely failed to materialize, contributing to the fire problems.

I mentioned that 2017 didn't have the most $1 billion disasters in history, but it was the most expensive year.

Here's the major reason why:  Incredibly, according to Aon Benfield, and this is pretty wild, three of the five most expensive weather disasters in world history occurred in 2017. 

The figures, again adjusted for inflation, show that Hurricane Harvey was the second most expensive disaster, with $100 billion in losses. (Number 1 was 2005's Hurricane Katrina, with $161 billion in inflation-adjusted losses.

Also in 2017, Hurricane Maria was the fourth most expesnive disaster with $65 billion in losses. Hurricane Irma was fifth, with $55 billion in damage. (Number 3 was Hurricane Sandy in 2012, with $70 billion in losses.

About 10,000 people died in natural disasters, including earthquakes, in 2017. That sounds absolutely terrible and it is. Still, if you want a silver lining, the number of deaths from these disasters in 2017 was definitely below the 2001-2016 average of 71,000 fatalities.

The worst single disaster, in terms of fatalities, was a landslide in Sierra Leone caused by a flood, About 1,100 people died in that one. The death toll from Hurricane Maria is still hard to come by, but that storm might have killed 1,000 or so people.

And by the way, yes, I'm accusing the Trump administration of helping to cover up the number of deaths in Puerto Rico from Maria. Public relations,  is of utmost importance to Trump, even more so than human lives. Or facts for that matter.

The worst disasters, as I noted, hit the United States. While there was an unacceptably high death toll in these U.S. disasters, we do have an excellent National Weather Service and plenty of other non-govermental meteorologists who got people out of the way of impending doom, thus saving lots of lives.

If you were lucky enough to escape damage from 2017's weather disasters, I still have some bad news. You still might end up paying.

According to PRI:

"Insurers are going to start passing these consts on to policyholders......People living in places that are at high risk for fires are going to end up seeing higher costs because that's the only way insurance companies can afford to cover increased damage."

It's not just fires. Insurance costs might go up because of payouts for other calamities, like floods, hail and the like.

Here in New England, we weren't really ground zero for any billion dollar disaster in 2017, but we did have expensive weather issues. One of the biggest were severe storms, tornadoes and flooding in New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine on June 30 and July 1. The other big, expensive weather issue in the region was the severe windstorm and flooding in late October.

I have to say 2018 is totally off to a bad start in the billion dollar disaster department. We're barely into February, and there are at least a couple contenders for billion dollar losses. One of them was a nor'easter in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada in early JanuaryThat storm caused immense coastal flooding and other losses due to high winds and snow.

Also in January, there were two epic wind storms in western Europe, either one of which might have caused more than a billion dollars in losses.

And by the way, spring, summer and early autumn in the Northern Hemisphere seem to garner the most terrible disasters. More people live in the north than in the south. Spring, summer and early autumn in the Northern Hemisphere is the most likely season for expensive, fatal disasters like tornado outbreaks, hail and severe thunderstorms, serious floods, wildfires and hurricanes.

A Supposedly "Colder" 2017 Turned Out To Be Globally Near Record Hot

Depending upon how you measure it, the year 2017 was either the second or third hottest year on record for Planet Earth.

I wouldn't quibble too much on whether it was actually second or third hottest. The difference in measurement comes out to a tiny, tiny fraction of a fraction of a degree, and the data from both agencies is in strong agreement.

Both NASA and NOAA agree that Earth's five warmest years have all taken place since 2010. That's pretty damn recent history.

According to NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information, 2017 ended up being the third hottest on record, behind 2016 and 2015.

What's most notable about the 2017 data is there was no El Nino last year. El Ninos tend to warm up the Earth's atmosphere. The combination of El Nino and human-caused global warming were the two biggest drivers making 2015 and 2016 the hottest.

The inference to this is that 2017 should have cooled down more than it did.

By the way, if you are under 41 years old, you've never seen a year globally that was at least a tiny bit cooler than the the 20th century average. Starting in 1978, each year has been warmer than normal.

Despite the chill in our tiny little corner of the globe here in the Northeast U.S. December, 2017 on a global basis was the fourth warmest on record, says NOAA.

There's still a La Nina going on, which tends to cool the Earth's atmosphere on the whole a little bit. So we'll see if 2018 continues a subtle global "cooling" trend, such as it is, or not.

Super Active 2017 Weather Year Was Second Warmest On Record, Burlington, Vermont

As we woke up on this subzero first day of 2018, after enduring six days of such weather with plenty more on the way, here's something that might warm your heart.

Vermont - at least the National Weather Service office in South Burlington - had its second warmest year on record in 2017.

The mean temperature for the year was 48.7, second only to the record hot year of 2012, which had a mean temperature of 49.9.

This leave us with a list that shows all of the top five warmest Burlington years have happened since 1998, and seven of the top 10 warmest have been since that year, 1998. Records in Burlington go back to the 1880s.

December was cold, as we well know, clocking in at 3.5 degrees colder than normal. March was cold, too. But January, February, May, September and October were all at or near record warm, so that powered the toasty 2017.

Although some months in 2017 were quite wet, others were quite dry.

Precipitation for 2017 averaged out only somewhat wetter than normal, nowhere near any records. Burlington had 36.8 inches of rain and melted snow, which is just over three inches wetter than average.

Below is a pretty long list of weather highlights from 2017 in Vermont. It was an incredibly active, dramatic year, full of sometimes unprecedented weather events. Seems like everything was off the rails in 2017, including the weather.

January 23: An ice storm hit much of Vermont on this date. Luckily, in most places the ice accumulation fell just short of causing major damage or power outages, but there were a few power failures and quite a few small to mid-sized branches fell.  

Mid-February: A series of mid-February snowstorms in Burlington, Vermont brought the total for the month to 29.8 inches. That's the seventh snowiest February on record. That deep snow didn't last long. See next entry.

But this was just a hint of what was to come. Two days later, on February 25, the temperature at Burlington soared to 72 degrees.

It's rare for a monthly record to be broken, and rarer still for the record to be broken by more than three degrees. But this was by nine degrees. Needless to say, this was by far the earliest 70 degree reading on record for Vermont.  

The temperature also hit 72 degrees in Bennington.

This heat wave ended that evening with a strong cold front, which brought strong to borderline severe thunderstorms to parts of Vermont. Also incredible for Vermont. Tornadoes were reported as far north as western Massachusetts, again unprecedented for February.

March 14-15: The "Pi Day Blizzard" struck the Northeast, hitting the northwestern half of Vermont, much of New York and Pennsylvania the hardest.

Burlington, Vermont tallied 30.4 inches of snow, the second biggest snowstorm on record for the Queen City. During the height of the storm, Burlington picked up five inches of new snow in just one hour.

Elsewhere, Bolton Valley, Vermont received 58 inches of snow from the storm. Lake Placid, New York clocked in with 42 inches, Hartwick, New York had 48 inches and Utica, New York had 36 inches. Binghamton, New York had its greatest snowstorm on record with 35.3 inches.

For the month of March, Burlington had 36.8 inches of snow, the third snowiest March on record.

April 28: The low temperature in Burlington, Vermont was 64 degrees. That's the warmest overnight low on record for any April day. Spring wasn't here yet, though. I got a half inch of snow at my house in St. Albans, Vermont on May 9.  

May 17-18: Record Heat, Severe Storms. Vermont got a very early taste of summer on May 17 and 18 as a brief, record setting hot spell enveloped the state. Plus, on the 18th, some very severe, mid-summer type thunderstorms struck.

On the 17th, Vermont record highs included 91 degrees at Burlington; 87 at Montpelier, and 89 in St. Johnsbury.

The next day, the 18th, Burlington reached 93 degrees, tying the all time record for the entire month of May.

Late in the afternoon, scattered, but very severe thunderstorms moved into Vermont. The worst was in West Addison, where an intense microburst blew a camp away with a 75 year old woman and her dog inside. Luckily, they were rescued with minor injuries. Other damage was reported in South Burlington, Williston and Barton.

May 31: Strong thunderstorms brought lots of hail and scattered wind damage to much of northern Vermont. In Colchester, so much hail fell that some remained on the ground four hours after the storm ended.  

June 11: Another brief early season hot spell peaked. Burlington, had a record high of 95 degrees, which was the hottest for so early in the season.

June 19: Scattered flooding was reported in southern Vermont. Parts of Rutland and Brattleboro flooded. A mudslide closed a section of Route 30 northwest of Brattleboro

June 30-July 1: Flash flooding and severe thunderstorms hit New England, especially in New Hampshire and Maine. Much of Vermont, except the northwestern part of the state, also endured flash flooding.

Several tornadoes were reported in New York, New Hampshire, Maine. Some counties in those states endured three different tornado warnings in one day. This in places that haven't had a tornado in years.

The National Weather Service in Gray, Maine issued seven tornado warnings on July 1. The previous record for the most tornado warnings in an entire year from that office was six.

No tornadoes were reported in Vermont, though there was a rotating wall cloud reported in Wilder. Flash flooding was the problem in Vermont, as well as New Hampshire and Maine.

An uprooted tree floating down the raging Mad River in Waitsfield speared the side of the town's covered bridge. Several buildings were damaged by flooding in Hartford, Vermont, as well as in numerous towns in New Hampshire.

August 21: Great viewing in Vermont for the partial eclipse of the sun. (Total eclipse through the middle of the United States.) However, the sky was smoky as it was for most of August and September due to numerous wildfires in the western parts of the U.S. and Canada.

August 22: A rare tornado watch was issued for the western part of Vermont. Though no tornadoes touched down, there were numerous reports of severe thunderstorms. A roof blew off a barn in Vergennes. Trees and wires were reported down state wide. And Burlington, Vermont endured street flooding from torrential rains.

Sept 2: A cold morning in an otherwise warm month. 28 degrees in Saranac Lake, New York, 34 in Bennington, Vermont

Sept. 24-27: An unprecedented late season heat wave hit the eastern two thirds of the United States, including Vermont. Burlington had four consecutive days in the 90s, by far the latest 90s on record. Montpelier and St. Johnsbury also had their latest 90s on record.

This was only the second September on record in Burlington that had four days in the 90s. The other, 1945, had 90s in the early part of the month.  

Interestingly, none of the eight days that hit 90 this year in Burlington happened during astronomical summer. The September 90s hit after the autumn equinox and the others occured in May and early June, before the summer solstice.

October: A record hot October in Vermont messed with the fall foliage season. The colors came up to two weeks late, and were subdued due to many unusually warm, humid days. Burlington broke the record for the hottest October by a large margin of 2.2 degrees above the previous record set in 1947.

October 29-30: One of Vermont's worst wind storms struck wide areas of the state, especially west of the Green Mountains. Widespread tree, power line and structural damage hit many towns, especially around St. Albans, Georgia, Milton and Colchester. Gusts reached over 70 mph in several locations.

More than 64,000 Vermont homes and business lost power, some for up to a week. There was also widespread wind and flood damage in New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

November 10: An early morning cold front brought an unseasonable round of cloud to ground lightning, thunder and hail to much of Vermont. The cold front was followed by record and near record cold, including 5 above in Saranac Lake, New York, 15 in Springfield, Vermont and 16 in Morrisville, Vermont.

December 24-31: Winter storms were followed by intense cold to close out 2017. Many communities failed to rise above 10 degrees in the last five days of the month, with widespread teens and 20s below at night. Montpelier had its 10th coldest December on record.

Earth Was Surprisingly Warm In February, Various Measurements Show

The Earth's climate change fever continued in February, as the month turned out to be the second hottest February on record for the globe.

It was also the fourth warmest month of any on record, if you look at it in terms of how far above normal the temperatures were.  

January, 2017 was extraordinarily warm, too.

The year is young, but so far it's not going to plan.

This year - 2017 was - and in most quarters is - expected to break a trend of recent super hot years by being slightly cooler than the previous year or years.

The year 2014 was the world's hottest on record. That is until 2015, with beat that record. Whoops! No, 2016 beat the the previous year for warmest on record. That's three years in a row that broke the world's heat record.

Virtually all climate scientists expcct 2017 to be abnormally warm, due to climate change. However, a big El Nino from previous years has ended. El Ninos tend to heat the atmosphere of the Earth, making hot times hotter.

This year began with a weak El Nina, which tends to cool the atmosphere a tiny bit. So 207 was widely expected to cool off a tiny little bit.  Yet, we're still remaining hot.

And now, some experts think a new heat-boosting El Nino might be brewing later this year.

Long-range forecasters caution that the possibility of an El Nino is still very uncertain for later this year. It's particularly hard to predict these things this time of year.

However, if an El Nino does develop, it would give a boost to global temperatures, which would give 2017 a shot at being another record hot year.

Very iffy at this point, but within the realm of possibility.

As I noted the other day, this climate change news comes amid a United States government that is totally hostile to the science.

The United States can't go it alone in battling climate change, obviously, but we need to be part of the effort.

The Earth's climate keeps showing signs of really being off the rails. Time for the United States to once again be the leader in protecting the world's security.

In this case, nuclear missiles aren't the problem. It's the stuff coming out of our car tailpipes.













Bill Mahar said it best in his monologue Friday. The Trump administration is like a person whose car is breaking down and "solves" the problem by putting black tape over the Check Engine light.
