It's cold in New England today, and more chilly weather is forecast for tomorrow. But don't worry, this type of thing often happens in early June. Summer is not canceled, thank goodness |
Sunday was gorgeous, with sunny to partly sunny skies in most places with temperatures in the 70s. Today, a few places will be lucky to make it to 50 degrees. Some places are ridiculous, especially in eastern New England.
In normally chilly Whitefield, New Hampshire for instance, the temperature is forecast to stay in the 40s until Thursday. Nothing like March in June, huh?
I also saw one computer model yesterday that indicated snow in parts of Maine and New Hampshire. This particular model is wicked unreliable, so few, if any people will see snow. However, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a little snow or freezing rain atop Mount Washington, New Hampshire today and tomorrow.
Indeed, freezing rain was reported at the Mount Washington summit as of 7 a.m. today.
On the bright side, it was starting to get kind of dry in northern New England. My gardens in St. Albans, Vermont seemed a bit dusty yesterday. (We missed out on the expected rain last Friday.)
This is a classic early June episode. It seems that in many if not most years, you get one last blast of chilly spring weather this time of year before summer begins in earnest.
At least we won't have anything like the June snows of 1816, the "Year Without A Summer."
By the end of the week, we'll be back to something close to seasonable June weather. Expect highs by then to be back up into the 70s in many, if not most locations.
