British Village Slammed By Huge Floods Twice In A Week

A shop in Glenridding, Great Britain being
trashed by the second devastating flood in two weeks.
It has to be heartbreaking to live or visit the lakes region village of Glenridding these days.

It's a beautiful place, but devastating floods - the worst in recent memory - hit the town twice in one week over the past several days.

Winter Storm Desmond caused widespread flooding in northern Britain and parts of Scotland and Ireland last weekend.  Glenridding was one of the hardest hit places.

Then another storm rolled through the other night, this just after residents had begun the flood cleanup in earnest. This time, the flooding was even worse, so the town is back to square one.

A construction crew spent the night of the flood trying to clear rocks and debris from the river, as that debris was diverting flood waters into the town. That helped, though local police said the crews shouldn't have done that, because the work was so dangerous.

Waters have once again receded in Glenridding, but a long rainy winter is ahead. Let's hope they don't get another flood.

And next time you complain about a week of lousy winter weather. Remember, it could be worse. Ask anyone in Glendridding.

Here's a Channel 4 news report on the flood that's worth watching:
