The Weather Channel had this prediction for snowfall this morning through Monday. Lavender and purple areas depice areas were they expect five or more inches of new snow from this storm. |
I guess it's back to normal winter weather for us, with all the joys, hazards and discomforts that come with it.
SUNDAY/MONDAY SNOW:
The winter storm traveling eastward across the northern tier of states is covering quite a bit of real estate.
As of mid-morning Sunday, winter weather advisories, winter storm warnings and winter storm watches covered a large swath from Minnesota to Maine, and from the Canadian border south to Pennsylvania.
Snow was falling Sunday morning in a band from Minnesota to Pennsylvania, and that was moving north and east.
In New England, it looks like the snow will become heavier as it treks eastward across the region. The winners in the snow total derby will probably be far southern Vermont, much of the state's Green Mountains, the northern two thirds of New Hampshire and most of Maine.
Those areas look like they're in for five to 10 inches of snow, with maybe locally higher amounts. Especially in Maine. The heaviest snow late tonight and tomorrow morning looks like it will be in upper elevations and along east and southeast facing slopes.
It looks like much of southern New England and the Hudson Valley of New York will get snow, mixing with and changing to an icy mix, then rain. Coastal New Hampshire and coastal southern Maine will probably get mixed precipitation, too.
Snow will overspread the Northeast later today and tonight and continue well into Monday morning, and much of the day once you get toward eastern New Hampshire and Maine.
The bad news: This Monday morning's commute will probably be rough, just like last Monday, as the storms's heaviest precipitation will come down in Vermont and eastern New York probably between 1 and 9 or 10 a.m. Monday. The heaviest precipitation will probably go on a little longer than that further east.
The good news; This is another welcome dump of snow in the ski resorts. This year so far is certainly NOT shaping up to be the barren bare slopes of last December, is it?
.
It'll briefly warm up Monday afternoon as the storm departs, with valley locations in much of New England probably getting a bit above freezing. The afternoon drive home, like last week, won't be nearly as bad as the morning run.
Aside from snow mountain snow showers Monday night that could drop another light dusting of snow in the mountains, things look quiet through Tuesday.
But then.....
ARCTIC BLAST AND SNOW
A big blast of Arctic air is starting to make its move from Canada as of Sunday morning. It'll invade much of the nation, including the Northeast this week.
In Vermont and surrounding states, it'll come at us in the form of a series of Arctic cold fronts Wednesday and Thursday. Each of these fronts will dump quick hitting snow showers and snow squalls on us, which could provide a couple inches of additional snow, with maybe quite a bit more than that in the mountains.
The real news will be the Arctic chill, especially Thursday through Saturday. Many areas will see their first subzero nighttime temperatures of the winter, and wind chills will be way, way below zero.
Get ready for that!
ANOTHER STORM:
It looks like another messy storm is due next weekend. It's too soon to say if it will be snow, or snow to a mix or mainly an ice storm. But it looks like it could be ugly. Stay tuned for that one!
