Average Start To New England Snow Season Big Improvement Over Last Year

Snow was moving into Vermont once again early this Monday morning, promising a slow, slippery, messy commute, but adding a bit more accumulation to the ski slopes.

Today's snowfall is no big deal for this time of year, with one to four inches expected across Vermont, northern New York and New Hampshire.

But to winter sports enthusiasts, today's light snowfall adds to what's been accumulating in the mountains. We are off to a much, MUCH better start to the snow season than we were last year.

Of course, last year we couldn't have been less snowy. It turned out to be the warmest winter on record, and one of the top five least snowy.

At this time last year, there was four inches of snow at the stake atop Mount Mansfield, Vermont. Today, there's 25 inches.

Unlike last year, ski areas are humming right along now, especially with a weekend snowfall of six inches or more on some of the northern Vermont mountains, though little fell in the deeper valleys.

So far, at least, the North Country is off to an average snow season. Who knows what the rest of the winter will bring, but the immediate forecast is encouraging.

At this point, I don't see real signs of a blockbuster snowstorm in the near future, but light snowfalls are coming fast and furious over the next week to 10 days, especially in the mountains.

There will probably be some rain in the valleys Wednesday into Thursday, but if anything falls from the ski from Friday into the weekend, it will be snow everywhere as temperatures actually drop to below normal levels.

Again, nothing untoward for this time of year -- highs in the 20s, lows in the upper single numbers and teens.  But still a big change from last year.

Welcome to winter, folks. We skipped the season last year. We're not doing so this year, it seems.
